Clinging to a softer world

Lead in the belly

Is as heavy,

As heavy as a heavy heart

When I’m treading water.

While I’m busy,

Busy choking on a mouth full of gall

You can take my pride

You can have it all.

I’ve never had much,

Never had much anyway.

So consider me a humble thing,

Floating in the river,

Quivering, shivering

But never going under.

I may grow weary from struggling,

So that I drown

But I will not sink,

Not unless you hold me down.

If not buoyant,

I am resolute,

And I will hold my breath

As long as I have to.

I’ll keep my feet kicking,

To keep my heart ticking

Because the only other option

Isn’t one.
